Natural Remedies for Chapped Lips

It is the lips that enhance the value of your smile and if there is redness or dryness seen over they and that too with soreness and peeling, then it could be really embarrassing. With chapped lips you not only feel awkward, but it sometimes hurt you a lot. It is always important to take proper care of your lips. Below is the list of home remedies to get rid of chapped lips:

  • Do not allow the lips to get licked. The natural oil is taken away from the lips if you lick them often.
  • Applying cucumber, lemon juice, aloe vera gel, cocoa butter on lips helps to make them soft.
  • Apply vitamin E oil on lips before going to bed at night.
  • Drinking plenty of water is very beneficial as it keeps the balance of moisture level in the body.
  • Margosa leaves juice/extract is also beneficial. Apply it on your lips.
  • Applying butter or clarified butter on your lips also helps to prevent lips cracking or chapping.
  • Massaging the lips with a mixture of milk cream, lime juice and rose water helps to keep the lips nourished and moisturized.
  • Honey is a nourishing natural substance that prevents drying of the lips.
  • Protecting the lips with a coat of glycerin and wheat germ oil helps to prevent moisture loss. Vitamin E oil may also be added.
  • Apply a paste of mashed papaya to the lips and surrounding areas. Allow the papaya to remain on for about ten minutes and then rinse. Papaya is known to contain certain exfoliating enzymes which help to keep the lips soft and help as an effective cure for dry lips.
  • Dryness of the lips can also be treated by applying a mixture of rose petals and milk. This also helps the lips to retain their pinkness.
  • Coconut oil and caster oil are also very effective in treating chapped lips. Simply apply small amount of oil on your lips several times daily.

When lips are chapped, they’re more sensitive, and certain foods can irritate them. Hold off on pepper, mustard, barbecue sauce, orange juice, and alcoholic beverages to give your lips a break as they heal.

You might want to consider whether an allergy to your toothpaste or mouthwash could be to blame for the rough, red skin on your lips. Try switching brands of toothpaste and skipping the mouthwash for a few days to see if the problem clears. Also, rinse well after brushing.

Do not peel the lip skin. It will cause more trouble.

Do not use lipsticks which dry your lips, unless you are using lipstick with moisturizer.

Vitamin A deficiencies can lead to dry skin. It is essential to consume foods rich in vitamin A such as tomatoes, legumes, carrots, green leafy vegetables and whole grains. Iron and B complex vitamin deficiencies can also lead to dry lips. One can consume foods rich in these nutrients or consult a doctor regarding the intake of nutritional supplements.

Screen out the sun. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage and dry the sensitive skin on your lips in the same way they can harm the skin on other parts of your body. use a lip balm that contains sunscreen. Choose a product that has an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher.
